We wanted to share this video from the JRA event from last year at the Samuel A. Green House. This video was forwarded to us by Kim Decker, the new Director of the Kehillah of Old York Rd., whose daughter is featured in it. Kim also shared these kind words with us: “My daughter, Miriam, has grown up delivering packages to the Samuel A. Green House since it opened. She knows (and has known) so many of the residents and feels very connected to them. The year before this video was made, some of the residents attended her Bat Mitzvah. Delivering to the Samuel Green House once a month has made a huge impression on our family’s lives."

Federation Housing, Inc. completed the Gil Rosenthal Garden of Peace at the Samuel A. Green House by installing 1,650 square feet of Porous Pave XL permeable pavement for the garden's walkways and circular patio. Located in Elkins Park, Penn., and managed by Federation Housing, the Samuel A. Green House is a low-income housing tax credit building for the elderly. The three-story building includes 84 one-bedroom apartments. An eco-friendly green building product manufactured in the U.S.A., Porous Pave XL is a highly porous and durable pour-in-place paving material made from 50 percent recycled rubber chips and 50 percent kiln-dried aggregate mixed with a liquid binder.

"At the Samuel A. Green House in Elkins Park that is associated with Federation Housing, Inc., a group of residents gather every Thursday afternoon to learn and share their thinking. They have been meeting for about three years, at first under the aegis of Gratz College and now as part of this program. They have explored topics including lessons from the weekly parshah, comparative monotheism, theodicy and When Bad Things Happen to Good People, contemporary issues, stories and legacies of our lives and other subjects along the way. This group includes learners who are in their 70s, 80s and 90s. They are intelligent, insightful, eager to learn and share, and vital.

Research indicates that this sense of vitality and purpose will bode well for people as they age and stave off dementia-related problems. The level of learning is high and we will soon be sharing some of these sessions with other SLLL populations throughout the United States, using the vehicle of the internet learning platform provided by Senior Learning Network out of Kansas City."
