Dear Friends,

In the Talmudic tract of Avot…”Sayings of our ancestors” there is one sparse line…”Either companionship or death.’

While we never take those words literally, the implication in that sentiment reveals how important personal connection, friendship and human interaction is to all people.

During this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, when people are socially distancing from each other in order to prevent the spread of this deadly disease, the impact of social isolation can be disabling as well. Elder adults, who are the most susceptible to contracting Covid-19 are among those who are also the most sequestered.

While it is important to maintain social distancing, it is also imperative to find ways to alleviate some of the isolation and loneliness which can affect the mental health and even physical health of our seniors.

There are many ways in which we can help.

First, some of our residents at Federation Housing have electronic devices. With internet access, residents can FaceTime with family members, attend “Zoom” programs offered by Federation Housing, Golden Slipper Gems, KleinLife, and other agencies.

Second, a phone call is always appreciated. A few minutes of friendly conversation, a cheerful voice, even a song can uplift folks’ spirits.

And, finally, encourage those who are able, to go outside, take a walk, get fresh air, while wearing masks and staying at least 6 feet apart from others.

Eventually, all of us will get through this pandemic. Let us realize that the support and care of our community will be of extreme importance in navigating this challenging time.

With blessings for safety and good health for all.

Shalom,

Rabbi Sandi Berliner

While the pandemic has altered the way in which business is conducted within Federation Housing communities, Marcia Jaffe of the Miriam & Robert M. Rieder Apartment, has not allowed the changes to dull her spirit! Rieder House Service Coordinator Meredith Cohen, describes Marcia as “a pleasure to talk to,” noting that Marcia has always been willing to help her learn since Meredith joined the Federation Housing family back in January.

July’s Resident Spotlight is on Marcia Jaffe, who has lived at Rieder House since 2013. Marcia is an active resident of Federation Housing, attending the lunch program, Golden Slipper GEMS events, and the SOWN (Supportive Older Women’s Network) meetings.

During this pandemic, Marcia has been getting by with the help of her fury friend, Boots. Boots has been by Marcia’s side for 11 years since the passing of her late husband, Sheldon. Together, they have made isolation a little bit easier. This is a unique time even for this 76 year-old, who has never experienced a global pandemic like this before. She recalls the Polio outbreak of the 1950s, but unlike today, there wasn’t a quarantine for that disease.

When asked how she has kept busy among the current climate, Marcia responded by reorganizing her apartment, playing word-find puzzles, and watching I Love Lucy, The View, and numerous crime shows for entertainment.

Something enjoyable that Marcia did during these past few months was having weekly picnics with her two close friends. Every Friday, they order take-out and eat outside of the Klein Life building (6 feet apart, of course).

Looking forward, Marcia cannot wait to eat at restaurants again, visit more friends, and finally get the haircut she has been waiting for!

Thanks Marcia! We are fortunate to have you as resident, and hope you continue to enjoy living at the Rieder House for years to come.

The continued presence of COVID-19 in our everyday lives, has necessitated many changes both programmatically and operationally to the Federation Housing community. Based on the CDC publication, Interim Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to Coronavirus Disease 2019, February 2020, Federation Housing has developed and implemented an FHI COVID-19 Policy and Procedure guide.

Responsibility for carrying- out these procedures is being handled by two members of our Corporate Staff; Jane Lahage, Director of Operations and Megan McGinty, Facilities Manager. Jane, as lead coordinator, is involved in training of staff regarding appropriate cleaning protocols and use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and Megan is tasked with ordering and tracking the much-needed supplies.

To date, expenses incurred have totaled nearly $71,000 and have fallen under 2 categories: (1): PPE for staff, including masks and gloves, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, sneeze guards and Tyvek suits and(2): Restorecore sanitizing of FH’s apartments, offices and maintenance shops. We are pleased to report that FH’s supply of masks and gloves is sufficient through March 2021.

In addition to these new operational procedures and expenses, the pandemic has also necessitated the suspension of our many community based programs and activities with the exception of our essential Senior Congregate Meal Program. This program now operates on a “take-out” basis, rather than in a congregate setting, across all Federation Housing communities.

Despite these additional challenges and disruptions, our residents and staff have continued to work together to adjust to these unprecedented circumstances. We are thankful for our many supporters including our Board, community friends of Federation Housing and our many foundation partners who have continued to provide additional financial support and flexibility as we navigate these uncertain times.
